Scottsdale Unified School District students start the new school year this week on August 6th. As the over 25,000 Scottsdale students go back to school parents are not only concerned with their children’s education, but their safety too. For children who will walk or bike to school, safety advocates encourage parents to remind them to walk only on sidewalks, cross only at crosswalks and last, but not least, always obey the school crossing guard.
The Arcadia neighborhood is lucky to have “Mr. Joe”, Joe Mettler, as one of their crossing guards. He earned AAA’s 2014 Crossing Guard of the Year award for Maricopa County. Mettler has become a fixture at Arcadia’s Hopi Elementary School and Ingleside Middle School for many years. He also volunteers for Arcadia Little League maintaining fields and supervising the snack bar. As the new school year begins, Mettler advises Arcadians to exercise extreme caution around school zones.
