The May issue of the Grayhawk Flight’s article “Commit to responsibly discharging pool water this summer” provides a good reminder how to properly prepare your pool for the summer. Draining and backwashing are essential parts to keep your pool ready for the hot summer, it is also important to do not discharge the water into the street. Draining the pool water to the street is a violation of local, state and federal regulations. Water from the street runs into the storm drains that are only intended for flood prevention. When the pool water that is high in chemicals or salt flows into the storm drains it eventually makes its way to the Salt River where it can damage or kill aquatic life. Also, pool water left in the streets can damage the pavement, leading to costly repairs. The best way to drain your pool is into your landscaping, but first wait three to seven days after any chemical treatments. If you have too much pool water for your landscape then you can drain into your home’s sanitary sewer clean-out. Visit www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/water for more pool tips.
