The McDowell Mountain Golf Club is a golf course the entire family can enjoy. Phil Mickelson, one of Arizona’s most popular golfers, not only plays but is now a golf course owner as well.
Mickelson, along with his manager Steve Loy, formed the M Club which offers full access to about 10 public and private courses, including McDowell Mountain Golf Club, at rates much lower than golfers would normally pay for multiple course memberships.
The McDowell Mountain Golf Club was recently added as part of the M Club, after going through extensive renovation by Mickelson and Loy. The McDowell Mountain Golf Club is a daily-fee course and was formerly known as Sanctuary Golf Club.
“In this day and age, it really doesn’t make any sense financially for golfers to pay membership fees at five or six golf clubs in order to have a variety of playing experiences,” Mickelson said. “We need to change that in a way so that golfers can have a private club experience at an affordable price.” ~ Arizona Golf Authority
Mickelson came up with the idea for the M Club a few years ago when the economy suffered and golf participation suffered along with it. The M Club members pay an initiation fee and monthly dues to belong to the many courses offered, most of which are in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area.
McDowell Mountain Golf Club, located at the base of McDowell Mountain Preserve, and within the McDowell Mountain Ranch community, was originally designed by Randy Heckenkemper who also handled the renovation. Along with re-shaping and defining the course, more decomposed grant was added to outlying areas so that more forgiveness could accommodate on errant shots. Esthetic appeal was also important, and new hand-stacked rock walls were added. Although the additions and changes created improved playability for average golfers, challenges were also added for the low-handicapper.
The Rick Smith Teaching Academy and the Callaway Golf Fitting Center were included in the plans for the course. McDowell Mountain Golf Course is made to be enjoyable for families, where children can learn alongside their parents, and enjoy playing at a professional facility close to their home.
