Situated on the top of Arizona’s Mogollon Rim, the Woods Canyon Lake has been an outdoor destination for families since 1956. Only two hours from Phoenix, Woods Canyon Lake Recreation area is in the middle of an outdoorsman’s paradise!
The Woods Canyon Lake Store offers boat rentals, groceries, beer & wine, fishing tackle, camping gear, firewood, ice, fishing & hunting licenses, hunting permit tags and an assortment of ice cream for those warm summer afternoons. You can rent electric trolling motor boats at the Woods Canyon Lake Store, as well as kayaks, paddle boards, peddle boards and canoes. You can even take your pets on the boats!
If no boats are available to rent and you forgot your fishing pole, there is a 3 mile trail that circles the lake for hikers and mountain bikers. The trail follows the shoreline and offers a challenging rugged terrain with beautiful lake views.
(Fun Facts: the lake is 25 feet deep and is stocked with Rainbow Trout every Spring.)
Direction from Phoenix: travel north on AZ87 to Payson, at the AZ260/87 junction in Payson, take 260 east for 30 miles to Forest Road 300 / Rim Road (located on the left side of the road – directly across from the Mogollon Rim Visitor Information Center). Turn left/north on FR 300 and drive 5 miles to Forest Road 150. Turn right on FR 150 and continue a little over 1 mile to the last parking lot, behind the Rocky Point Picnic Ground.
