The Not My Kid organization, based in Scottsdale, encourages teens to make good choices today for long term success tomorrow. Not My Kid was founded in 1999 by local residents Debbie and Steve Moak. The message of Not My Kid is prevention, they want to impact kids early to help them recognize the differences between right and wrong. The hope is through preparation kids will develop the courage and confidence to make positive choices in difficult situations. When presenting to students, Not My Kid has a core group of “peer educators” because students are more likely to listen to someone they can relate to. Presentation for parents and school faculty are more commonly done by behavioral health-care workers or by local law enforcement. Together the message is to convey the challenges facing kids and how to recognize the signs of potential problems before they occur.
